Xiaomi Introduces Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus with 18:9 Displays Ahead of Its Launch

SmartphonesThe release of Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are scheduled to launch on Thursday in China. Before that launch, Donovan Sung, global spokesperson Xiaomi, shared four images of devices on Twitter and gave a sneak peek. According to the design seen on the images of Redmi 5 and 5 Plus, it may sport 18:9 displays, rear fingerprint sensor, and no hard buttons.  To recall, Redmi 5 was spotted on TENAA, a Chinese telecom certification site last week. According to its listing, we have a fair insight to the specs of the smartphone. Another report has also leaked its price.

Sung added in his Twitter post, “So everyone ready for Redmi 5 and 5 Plus? We are going to introduce these new devices on Thursday, December 7 in China. Giving a sneak peek to everyone!” As discussed earlier, the images shared shows devices from all angles and we have observed a taller smartphone with 18:9 display ratio, no hard buttons for navigation, and rear fingerprint sensor.  There is no visible change in design. Instead, the differences may lie in the specs.

As discussed earlier, along with the launch last week, Xiaomi Redmi 5 was spotted on the site of TENAA. According to the specs shared, the smartphone sports 5.7” (720x1440p) HD+ 18:9 display like a bezel-less display. So, we can see a smaller form factor with regarding display size rather than what we have seen on typical 16:9 displays.

According to TENAA listing, the device is said to run on 1.8GHz Octa-Core processor, which is guessed to either be Snapdragon 625 or Snapdragon 450. Since Redmi 4 had Snapdragon 435 SoC, it is less likely that it will come with Snapdragon 625. So, it is supposed to follow another Snapdragon 400 series.

The TENAA also lists three RAM options on the upcoming Redmi 5, i.e. 2GB, 3GB, and 4GB, along with three storage sizes, i.e. 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. It is expected to work in individual SKUs. The storage may be expandable up to 128GB via MicroSD card. According to the listing, the smartphone has 3200mAh battery, i.e. much smaller than 4100mAh battery in Redmi 4.

It is believed to have 5MP front and 12MP rear camera. Dimensions listed cover 151.8×72.8×7.7mm and it weighs 157g. It is listed to run on MIUI 9 based Android 7.1.2 Nougat out of the box. The rear panel has a fingerprint scanner.

On the flip side, Redmi 5 Plus, according to previous leaks, is expected to have Snapdragon 625 or Snapdragon 630 processors, different storage and RAM options, and massive 4000mAh battery. We don’t need to wait any longer before the launch on December 7, when Xiaomi might reveal everything on Redmi 5 and 5 Plus.

According to the price leaks, Redmi 5 listing reveals CNY 1399 (or Rs. 13,600 approx), as the first sale is claimed to be on December 10.
